It’s that time of year… Fall is slowly changing to Winter and cooler weather is setting in. This is about the time residents in Southern Oregon turn off their fans and turn on their heaters. The first time you turn on your heater, many things could happen – or worse – nothing could happen!
Here are a few easy steps to take to make sure your home stays toasty warm this Winter:
1. Before you turn on your heater, take a few minutes to inspect filters and your in-home thermostat. Change or clean dirty filters and make sure your thermostat is ready for operation.
2. Take a look around the actual heating unit to make sure nothing flammable has been stored nearby over the summer (lawnmowers and gas cans are common culprits!)
3. Once you turn on your heater, it’s normal to smell burning dust. Dust settles on the heating components, but burns off as soon as the unit heats up. Open a window to dispel the odor quickly. If the smell lasts for more than a few hours, it’s probably time to change filters and clean ducts.
It only takes a few minutes to check out your heater before winter sets in – jump on it!
